Why Bridgerton makes us so horny

The last time my girlfriends were as giddy and blush-faced over something like this was when Fifty Shades of Grey came out. So I knew something was up when they started telling me about the Netflix series Bridgerton...

In a recent anonymous post to the community, one of our Pleasurey members even admits that the only thing that could get her sex drive back was binging on the show.

Sounds wild?

Not if you consider why the show has got our loins a-thumping.

We are a little perverted

Yes, voyeurism is actually illegal. In its strict definition it implies observing people while they engage in private activities, without their consent. But as a fantasy, it’s extremely common.

First, our wiring makes it hard for us to look away from sexually interesting things. And in some cases, looking is actually preferred to participating.

Hence, we are a little perverted. We love spying in on the relationships of others. And the way Bridgerton’s characters play cat and mouse has us holding our breath, waiting, anticipating. And finally, when they do get it on, we can’t pull away. We have been lured, baited, and ultimately, rewarded for watching.

Thankfully, in this situation, it is fully consensual.

It’s good to escape

With its elaborate sets and costumes, Bridgerton feels a world removed. We know it’s not reality. It’s better than reality. And that’s the key… that it’s a form of escape for us. Much like the costumes, it’s indulgent.

According to relationship therapist Esther Perel, “Fantasy and imagination are fundamental elements of a robust sexual life.” Especially for women. Why? Because it’s the story we tell ourselves and the meaning we ascribe to the acts we’re engaging in.

Bridgerton nailed the story.

We are starved for touch

By now it’s no secret that people have been reporting having less sex during the pandemic.

But even the simple act of a welcome hug or kiss has become relatively taboo. And that’s a problem because a big part of human connection is about being able to actually physically touch.

Bridgerton it seems has hit a central nerve: Our craving for intimacy in a time that has felt anything but hedonistic.
